Copper is often used to treat parasitic infections on fresh and saltwater fish.
To be effective, the copper concentration in the aquarium must be maintained at the therapeutic level for several weeks.
Frequent testing is required to monitor the level.
Copper should not be used in aquariums with invertebrates, including snails, shrimp, crayfish and corals, as well as in aquariums or ponds with plants.
Also, some fish species are very sensitive to copper treatments.
Copper can also enter the aquarium in tap water which may contain copper leached from pipes.

The API Copper Test Kit allows you to easily and accurately monitor copper levels to maintain copper-based fish treatments at therapeutic levels, and tests copper levels from 0 to 4 ppm.
The kit measures both free and chelated copper, and is for use in fresh and saltwater aquariums, or with ponds.

Test kit includes:
1x 37ml test bottle
1x Glass test tube
1x Color chart
Easy-to-read instructions

Fill a clean test tube with 5 ml of water to be tested (to the line on the tube).

Add 10 drops of Copper Test Solution, holding dropper bottle upside down in a completely vertical position to assure uniformity of drops.

Cap the test tube and shake for 5 seconds.

Wait 1 minute for the color to develop.

Remove the cap.
Hold the test tube upright over the white area on the color card and view the color of the solution by looking down from above.
The closest match indicates the ppm (mg/L) of copper in the water sample.
Even a very faint color indicates the presence of copper.
Rinse the test tube with clean water after use.
